dead island 2 -

Dead Island 2 will be playable on the show floor at next month's Gamescom, Deep Silver has announced, "marking the first time a Dead Island game will be playable on German soil".

The upcoming action-horror will be joined by fellow Deep Silver titles Dead Island: Epidemic, Sacred 3, Risen 3: Titan Lords, Emergency 5 and Metro Redux. Homefront: The Revolution and third-person spin-off Escape Dead Island, however, both appear to be skipping the show floor.

Deep Silver is the third major publisher to confirm the lineup of titles it's taking to Gamescom, following Square Enix and Konami's announcements earlier this week.

Last night it was revealed that Deep Silver's parent company Koch Media had acquired the Homefront IP from Crytek, transitioning development of Homefront: The Revolution from Crytek UK to new studio Deep Silver Dambuster.

VideoGamer.com has acquired the first screenshots of F1 2014, offering the first glimpse at this year's game ahead of its official reveal later today.

It was confirmed last night that the first details on F1 2014 would be revealed today, although ongoing rumours point to the game skipping a release on PS4 and Xbox One, instead heading only to Xbox 360, PS3 and PC.

f1 2014 -

Codemasters has yet to officially confirm which platforms this year's game will release on, although prior comments have suggested that the developer has been working on a next-gen release.

"Our goal is to achieve the most realistic visuals possible," Codemasters said last year commenting on next-gen development, "and with the next generation consoles offering us more speed and power, we will be in the best position we have ever been in, which will allow us to achieve the level of realism which will enhance the driving and emotional experience for the F1 player."

Expect more details on F1 2014 later today.

F1 2014 officially announced - but is it only coming to Xbox 360 & PS3?

Codemasters has officially announced F1 2014, this year's entry in its high-speed racing series.

However, the game may not be heading to PS4 & Xbox One, with ongoing rumours pointing to a last-gen-only release.

Both Amazon France and Amazon Spain have previously listed F1 2014 for release only on Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC, with an update from self-proclaimed XBLA watchdog Lifelower this morning stating:

"Just saw F1 2014 in Famitsu mag. Coming to PS3/360 on Oct 2nd in Japan."

If it does land on next-gen, though, expect it to run at a smooth 60fps and improve on the game's physics.

"Our goal is to achieve the most realistic visuals possible," Codemasters teased last year, discussing the benefits of bringing F1 to PS4 and Xbox One, "and with the next generation consoles offering us more speed and power, we will be in the best position we have ever been in, which will allow us to achieve the level of realism which will enhance the driving and emotional experience for the F1 player."

Look out for the first solid details on F1 2014 later today.

Homefront: The Revolution development transferred to new studio as Deep Silver acquires IP

Homefront: The Revolution screenshot
Homefront: The Revolution screenshot

Deep Silver has acquired the Homefront IP from Crytek and transferred development of next year's Homefront: The Revolution over to a new Nottingham-based studio, Deep Silver Dambuster Studios.

The game had previously been in development at Nottingham-based Crytek UK. It isn't yet clear whether Deep Silver has also acquired Crytek UK and renamed the studio, or whether an entirely new studio has been founded to continue development.

"We are thrilled to see another great IP joining the Deep Silver universe," said Koch Media CEO Klemens Kundratitz. "We strongly believe in the potential of Homefront: The Revolution and trust in the new team to continue the path we have been walking in the last years."

Deep Silver's acquisition follows weeks of speculation over Crytek's financial situation, which alleged that Crytek UK employees had been failed to be paid on time.

The dispute allegedly led to the "bulk of employees" refusing to turn up to work.

Last week, however, Crytek publicly acknowledged concerns adding that it had "now laid the foundations for securing Crytek's future - not just in the short term, but also long term."

VideoGamer.com has contacted Crytek and Deep Silver for further comment.

EA Access doesn’t ‘represent good value to PlayStation Gamer’, claims Sony

ps4 hardware1111111111 -

Following the announcement of EA's Access program and its exclusivity to Xbox One, many were curious about whether the service might make its way to PlayStation gamers. But recent comments from Sony seem to suggest otherwise.

In an email to Game Informer, a Sony representative compared the service to PlayStation Plus.

"We evaluated the EA Access subscription offering and decided that it does not bring the kind of value PlayStation customers have come to expect," the message said.

"PlayStation Plus memberships are up more than 200% since the launch of PlayStation 4, which shows that gamers are looking for memberships that offer a multitude of services, across various devices, for one low price. We don’t think asking our fans to pay an additional $5 a month for this EA-specific program represents good value to the PlayStation gamer."

EA’s subscription service currently offers players access to four games (Battlefield 4, FIFA 14, Madden NFL 25 and Peggle 2) for £3.99 per month or £19.99 per year, with more titles to be added as well as a 10 per cent discount on DLC and digital downloads of full games, and the promise of trials for future releases ahead of launch.

It seems that Sony gamers will have to sit tight and enjoy PlayStation Plus offerings for the foreseeable future.

The Last of Us Remastered's day one patch improves 30fps shadows

The Last of Us: Remastered screenshot
The Last of Us: Remastered screenshot

The Last of Us Remastered's day one patch improves the quality of shadows when running the game at 30 frames per second, Digital Foundry has confirmed.

The PS4 port, which launches in the UK this Friday, ships with a toggle to cap the frame rate at 30fps, half the game's usual 60fps speed. Prior to the patch, players who activated the toggle wouldn't notice any difference besides the lower frame rate. But after installing it, those who choose to run the game at 30fps will benefit from higher resolution shadows.

"At 60fps the PS4's shadows are already clearer than the PS3's, but admittedly there are still some rough, pixelated spots," reads Digital Foundry's report. "Standing your character near a wall exposed to direct sunlight tends to bring out the PS4 remaster's ugly side, but the 30fps toggle resolves this in an instant.

"At the flip of a switch, aliasing is removed from long straight lines projected onto walls, and more granular shadow details - such as plant-life - become sharp and defined. It's an issue most noticed around the Bill's Town section, where sunlight is at a low angle - though curiously not for shadows produced from the characters torchlight.2

The report adds, however, that activating the toggle introduces a "shadow glitch" that removes "crucial shadow maps around interior areas".

"This is most keenly felt while travelling through the warehouses with Bill, where streaks of light line the corners of each room. It's an immersion-breaking glitch that disappears on returning to the 60fps mode; perhaps suggesting that the patch's enhanced 30fps mode could have benefitted from a little more testing."

Enabling the 30fps cap does not enable any further graphical enhancements.

In addition to altering shadows the day one patch also introduces a new Photo Mode, letting players manipulate the camera and take snapshots from the game.

The Last of Us Remastered launches this Friday, August 1.

The Last of Us had a secret deleted ending

The Last of Us: Remastered screenshot
The Last of Us: Remastered screenshot

The original ending for The Last of Us would have been set four years in the future, game director Neil Druckmann has revealed while discussing the game's deleted scene during last night's live theatrical performance.

CAUTION: SPOILERS FOLLOW

As reported by NeoGAF users in attendance at the show, the scene would have caught up with Joel and Ellie at Tommy's dam four years after he saves her from the Fireflies. Joel is said to be romantically involved with a girl named Esther, although his relationship with Ellie appears to have been strained by his deception.

"El lies acting fairly distant, probably conflicted about joels lie," one user says.

Joel was said to offer Ellie a guitar and play a song for her, promising to teach her. "The scene ends with her striking a note on the guitar," the report concludes.

The scene may sound familiar to fans that have closely followed rumours of a sequel following the game's release last year. Could the image below really be a teaser for what may lie ahead for The Last of Us?

John Romero: 'PC is decimating console'

john romero1 -
john romero1 -

PC gaming is "decimating console" thanks to its cheaper pricing while free-to-play gaming has "killed a hundred AAA studios", according to former id developer John Romero.

Although the latest generation of consoles is selling at a record pace, Romero believes that the PC market is still leaps and bounds ahead.

"With PC you have free-to-play and Steam games for five bucks," he told Games Industry. The PC is decimating console, just through price. Free-to-play has killed a hundred AAA studios.

"It's a different form of monetization than Doom or Wolfenstein or Quake where that's free-to-play [as shareware]. Our entire first episode was free - give us no money, play the whole thing. If you like it and want to play more, then you finally pay us. To me that felt like the ultimate fair [model]. I'm not nickel-and-diming you.

"I didn't cripple the game in any design way. That was a really fair way to market a game," Romero continued. "When we put these games out on shareware, that changed the whole industry. Before shareware there were no CD-ROMs, there were no demos at all. If you wanted to buy Ultima, Secret of Monkey Island, any of those games, you had to look really hard at that box and decide to spend 50 bucks to get it."

Romero goes on to discuss how improvements in the structure of free-to-play models will help raise the level of quality for all.

"Everybody is getting better at free-to-play design, the freemium design, and it's going to lose its stigma at some point. People will settle into [the mindset] that there is a really fair way of doing it, and the other way is the dirty way. Hopefully that other way is easily noticeable by people and the quality design of freemium rises and becomes a standard."

He then goes on to further explain why he thinks PC is superior to consoles.

"The problem with console is that it takes a long time for a full cycle. With PCs, it's a continually evolving platform, and one that supports backward compatibility, and you can use a controller if you want; if I want to play a game that's [made] in DOS from the '80s I can, it's not a problem. You can't do that on a console. Consoles aren't good at playing everything. With PCs if you want a faster system you can just plug in some new video cards, put faster memory in it, and you'll always have the best machine that blows away PS4 or Xbox One."

A new entry to the Doom series was recently announced, with attendees at QuakeCon getting an early sneak peek ahead of a full public reveal next year.

Journey, Unfinished Swan and Until Dawn may be headed to PS4

Journey screenshot
Journey screenshot

PS3 hit Journey and indie adventure The Unfinished Swan may be announced for PlayStation 4 at next month's Gamescom, according to an alleged list of games playable at the show.

Uncovered by NeoGAF (and swiftly removed from the official site by Sony) the list claims that both titles will be playable on PS4 at next month's show, along with unreleased horror Until Dawn.

First announced for PS3 during Gamescom 2012, Until Dawn was said to use the PlayStation Move controller to control a torch and saw various people getting murdered up by a mysterious killer.

The game was expected to release last year but has fallen off the radar since its initial announcement. Back in March, however, Sony's head of Worldwide Studios Shuhei Yoshida said that the game would be a “really good fit” for PS4 VR headset Project Morpheus, suggesting that development may have transferred to Sony's next-gen console.

Still, if the list is legit we don't have all that long until we find out. Sony's Gamescom press conference kicks off in Cologne in just two weeks' time.

Mass Effect 4 to focus on planetary exploration as Mako makes a comeback

mass effect mako -
mass effect mako -

BioWare has released the first details on the next Mass Effect, revealing that the game will be based around planetary exploration and confirming the return of the original game's expedition vehicle, the Mako.

The details emerge from this weekend's San Diego Comic-Con where BioWare released prototype footage of the new Mako roaming around an ice planet while discussing the upcoming game with fans.

The redesigned vehicle is allegedly being built for speed and could support player customisation, with players expected to spend a fair amount of time in the Mako exploring new environments.

The main character will continue to be human, too, BioWare is alleged to have confirmed, although it has yet to detail other playable races.

Don't get your hopes up of seeing the new Mass Effect for a while yet, though. According to a video from The Escapist (below), producer Mike Gamble "indicated that the game is still years away from launch".

BioWare revealed the new Mass Effect during this year's E3, stating that the game would take players to a whole new region of space where they'll encounter brand new characters. The game has yet to receive an official title or release window.

Tekken 7 will conclude the Mishima Saga, new trailer revealed

Bandai Namco has released a new trailer for Tekken 7 that provides a greater insight into the upcoming fighter's backstory.

According to the trailer, Tekken 7 will conclude the long-running Mishima Saga with many of the Mishima family making an appearance throughout the video, including Kazuya, Heihachi, Jinpachi and close friend Wang Jinrei.

It is Kazuya's mother Kazumi who features most prominently, narrating the trailer. In a few frames, we see a glimpse of her devil form through Kazuya's eyes after she confirms it is through her bloodline that the Mishima descendents are able to transform into supernatural beings.

Kazumi affirms it is her responsibility to stop Heihachi once and for all and, seeing as this is promoted as the closing chapter of the Mishima Saga, it can be assumed that Kazumi could be one of the new playable characters, in devil or human form.

No consoles or release date were listed in the trailer.
