Splatoon has Mario Kart 8 size marketing campaign

Splatoon screenshot

Nintendo will support its new Wii U IP Splatoon with a marketing campaign to rival that of Mario Kart 8, Nintendo UK marketing manager Chandra Nair has told MCV.

Mario Kart 8 had a six month campaign which began in May 2014.

"We have a substantial campaign planned for Splatoon. To give you an idea of the scale, we're matching Mario Kart 8 – that's the potential we think Splatoon has," said Nair.

"We have the utmost confidence in the potential of Splatoon. It gives retailers a fantastic art style that stands out in-store or on-screen and it also offers various up-sell opportunities with the accompanying Amiibo. It's a really interesting game for us because it allows us to expand out to a group of people who may never have considered Wii U before."

You'll see ads for the game at cinemas in front of Disney's family film Tomorrowland and the more adult-focussed Mad Max: Fury Road. A Splatoon skatepark is also opening in Corby.

Splatoon launches for Wii U on Friday.

Need For Speed reboot officially announced for PS4, Xbox One & PC

Need For Speed screenshot

EA has formally announced Need For Speed, the next game in its hit racing franchise heading to PS4, Xbox One and PC this autumn.

This year's game is being described by EA as a "full reboot" of the franchise, designed to deliver "on what the fans want, and what Need For Speed stands for" with extensive customisation and a night-time open-world setting.

But while the game appears to be inspired by fan-favourite Need For Speed Underground, this year's game won't feature a subtitle. It isn't yet clear whether developer Ghost Games is treating the game as a spiritual successor to Underground, either.

The game is being developed on the same version of Frostbite as Star Wars Battlefront and, just like DICE's shooter, will not be available on last-gen platforms or Wii U.

"Need for Speed is one of the most iconic names in gaming, and we're returning it to greatness in this reboot," said executive producer Marcus Nilsson. "Pulling on our 20 years of history, and then taking a year out from releasing a game, we are making the game we’ve always wanted to. We're listening to the fans and delivering an experience that will capture their imagination and unleash their passion for cars and speed."

A teaser trailer offering the first look at "in-game" visuals can be seen below, with a full gameplay trailer coming at E3 on June 15.

Xbox One Windows 10 update coming 'post-summer'

xbox one 1111111 -

Xbox One's big Windows 10 update won't arrive until after summer, Xbox head Phil Spencer has confirmed, aligning with earlier rumours stating that Microsoft plans to stagger the operating system's release cross devices.

Responding to a fan asking when the Windows 10 beta will start on Xbox One, Spencer said: "It will be post-summer."

Windows 10 is due to roll out on PC this summer, with a July release hinted at by AMD's CEO Lisa Su.

Its implementation on Xbox One, however, will allow for cross-platform play between Xbox One and PC, and let developers easily port Windows 10 apps to console.

NHL 16 confirmed for September on PS4 & Xbox One

NHL 16 screenshot

NHL 16 will see the return of EA Sports Hockey League when it releases on PS4 and Xbox One this September, EA has confirmed.

The popular online team mode was absent from last year's NHL 15, but will return in a "reimagined" form in NHL 16, letting players choose a specialised player class "to deliver a balanced competitive experience on the ice".

6 vs 6 online team play is also included, as is online couch co-op which appears to let local players jump in and out of online matches. Be a GM, Be a Pro and Hockey Ultimate Team return too, with the latter offering a new Single Player Seasons mode that lets you practice your skills offline.

A new visual on-ice training tool also hopes to help new and returning NHL players improve their offensive and defensive skills, offering shooting targets, advice on passing lanes and more.

Presentation is being enhanced, too, with EA promising the most realistic players yet and a "story-driven commentary package to pull you into the energy of the game like never before".

Xbox 360 and PS3 players, meanwhile, will be able to pick up NHL Legacy Edition, a new game also due out this September that features updated rosters and "brings together the most popular modes and award-winning gameplay features from nine years of NHL hockey".

While a trailer for NHL 16 has yet to be released, you can see a small amount of footage of this year's game in the video below.

Battleborn to be at E3 'in a big way', more info coming before the show

battleborn1 -

Gearbox's first-person hero shooter Battleborn will be at E3 "in a big way", 2K's parent company Take Two Interactive has said, with more info on the game planned to be revealed before the show.

Described by Take Two as a "groundbreaking new intellectual property from Gearbox Software", the game has been likened to a first-person MOBA, with characters able to gain new abilities and level up completely within each match.

The game is still scheduled for release on PS4, Xbox One and PC before March 31, 2016, although it remains unknown whether it will release during calendar year 2015 or in the first quarter of 2016.

"Currently in development for PlayStation 4, Xbox One and the PC by Borderlands creators Gearbox Software, Battleborn is a first-person shooter with a deep roster of unique playable heroes," Take Two said during its earnings call earlier this evening. "Through the game's accelerated character growth system, every hero can be fully experienced in a single story mission or multiplayer match.

"Next month Battleborn will be at E3 in a big way and we will have more news to share about the title prior to the show."

2K is also due to reveal a major new AAA title soon, with the game likely to be on show alongside Battleborn at next month's E3.

Massive Chalice exits Early Access on June 1, with Xbox One version due around then too

massive chalice11 -

Kickstarter-funded Massive Chalice will exit Steam Early Access and launch in full on June 1, developer Double Fine has announced.

"It's been two years since we started on our quest for the Massive Chalice, and we're excited to say that our journey is nearly at an end! After many months of designing, building, reading through our early access feedback, and playing the game for hours on end, we're finally in lockdown. That means the team is in the final stages now; working purely on bug fixing, performance, and polishing things up, in between sending builds off to Microsoft for certification," wrote Double Fine.

The Xbox One version is launching around the June 1 date, too, and will be a console exclusive for Microsoft.

Version 1.0 promises some major improvements for those already playing the game. In addition to a thick layer of polish, the game has been rebalanced based on player feedback.

"The team has spent a considerable amount of time rebalancing the game to be more fun, fair, challenging, or punishing, depending on how you look at it," said Double Fine. "Thanks to everyone who helped us with this fine tuning, we got some invaluable feedback from you guys."

Version 1.0 will also support controllers, offering the same control scheme and UI as the Xbox One version. Achievements have also been added.

DiRT Rally: Pikes Peak screenshots revealed

Codemasters has revealed the first screenshots and details on Pikes Peak, a new Hillclimb rally environment coming soon to DiRT Rally.

Available in a free content update later this month, Pikes Peak promises to offer a brand new challenge over the game's three existing locations, with the course's extreme altitude affecting the player's engine power and aerodynamics.

"It's such a different challenge tearing up the hill with no co-driver giving you instructions," chief game designer Paul Coleman wrote in a post on the game's website. "You really have to learn the route and there is plenty to learn. From a simulation angle we’ve improved the way we model the Aerodynamics. The Hillclimb cars have some extreme wing setups and this extra component of the simulation has given us plenty to layer back into the rally cars you are already driving, we’ll be getting on the case with that as soon as we can.

"Another key element of Pikes Peak is the change in altitude. The difference in air pressure has a huge impact on the power the engine can produce and how much downforce is created by those big wings. Power loss with altitude is something we already simulate (you may have noticed a difference in car performance between Wales and Greece) but in Pikes Peak you actually get to feel the power drop as you climb."

More information on DiRT Rally's new Hillclimb mode will be revealed next week.

DiRT Rally launched on PC last month with regular free content updates planned to roll out throughout the Early Access period.

Pikes Peak will be first up, with a new rally environment set in Germany's Panzerplatte following in June. Updates introducing a new PVP multiplayer mode and Rallycross are also scheduled to release later this year.

Ubisoft 'bullish' about virtual reality; has a 'few titles coming in the first year'

projectmorpheus2 -

Ubisoft already has a number of games in development for virtual reality devices, CEO Yves Guillemot has revealed, with a few of them due to arrive within the first year of the technology's release.

"We believe a lot in virtual reality because we see that it's really giving a chance for gamers to be more immersed in worlds and we are developing a certain number of games that are going to take advantage of these new possibilities," Guillemot explained during Ubisoft's latest earnings call last night.

"What we are doing is working on the different brands we have to see how we can take advantage of those new possibilities but in making sure also that we don't suffer what comes with it, which is the difficulty to play a long time with those games."

The first major VR headsets are due to go on sale later this year, with a commercial release of the HTC Vive expected ahead of Christmas. Oculus Rift is also set for release in early 2016 with PS4 headset Project Morpheus due to arrive in the first half of the new year.

"We are very bullish about the potential," Guillemot continued. "We think it's going to bring more players to the universe of video games and we are going to come with our brands. We'll have a few titles coming in the first year and we'll have regular games coming following that."

Prices and exact release dates for the VR headsets have yet to be announced.

The Division delayed to 2016 on PS4, Xbox One & PC

the division -

The Division has been delayed to 2016, Ubisoft has announced.

The title is now targeting a release during the fourth quarter of Ubisoft's financial year, which runs from January 1, 2016 to March 31, 2016.

The new date marks the second major delay for The Division which was originally due to release in 2014. Ubisoft has yet to comment on the reason for the latest delay.

Other Ubisoft titles, including Rainbow Six Siege and the recently announced Assassin's Creed Syndicate, are still on track for release later this year.

"We believe we have a great title in our hands and we are giving additional time to our developers to fully fulfill their creative vision," Ubisoft said in a statement provided to VideoGamer.com. "This decision proved right on WD [Watch Dogs] which clearly outperformed the targets we had set up for its original FY14 launch more than compensating for the extra development costs incurred."

Alien Isolation sales reach 2.1 million

Alien: Isolation screenshot

Creative Assembly's first-person survival horror Alien Isolation has sold over 2.1 million copies, SEGA has revealed.

The figure suggests that sales may have doubled in the 4 months since January, when SEGA announced that the game had sold through 1 million units.

It isn't clear, however, whether today's figure accounts for the number of units shipped or sold through.

Other sales figures announced today include Sonic Boom, which sold a combined 620,000 units on Wii U and 3DS, and Football Manager 2015 which sold 810,000. Alien Isolation was SEGA's top-selling packaged game for the entire fiscal year.

Alien Isolation launched on PS4, Xbox One, Xbox 360, PS3 and PC in October and left Steve impressed for nailing "the true horror of Alien".

Job ads for Creative Assembly posted back in March revealed that the studio is developing another "multi-platform AAA blockbuster" for PS4, Xbox One and PC, although it remains unclear whether it's linked to a sequel.

Capcom wants to release more HD remasters of 'popular older games'

Resident Evil HD Remaster screenshot

Capcom plans to release more HD remasters of "popular older games" by the end of March 2016.

The publisher touched upon its re-release plans during a presentation of its latest financial results, where it revealed that it planned to "utilize existing intellectual property, such as by selling HD remastered versions of popular older games" during its current fiscal year.

Capcom released two current-gen remasters - DmC: Devil May Cry Definitive Edition and Resident Evil HD Remaster - during its previous financial year, and has already announced a PS4, Xbox One and PC remaster of Devil May Cry 4 for release this summer.

But could it have more in the works? A remastered version of GameCube title Resident Evil Zero is rumoured to be in development, but has yet to be officially confirmed.

Resident Evil HD Remaster launched in February and quickly went on to sell over 1 million units. Sales figures for DmC: Devil May Cry Definitive Edition, however, have yet to be announced.

Konami is changing its trade name - but it's nothing you need to worry about

konami -

Konami has announced plans to change its trade name later this year - but it's nothing to get too worked up about.

From October 1, 2015, Konami Corporation will be renamed Konami Holdings Corporation, with the company hoping the change will help "promote a clear understanding of its position among stakeholders".

"Ever since the Company shifted to a pure holding company structure on March 31, 2006, the Company has managed the operation of four primary businesses – Digital Entertainment, Health & Fitness, Gaming & Systems, and Pachislot & Pachinko Machines – at its group companies engaged in the aforementioned businesses," Konami said in a notice posted on its website.

"As the Company enters the 10th year under the pure holding company structure in March next year, the Company aims to once again promote a clear understanding of its position among stakeholders by changing the trade name."

Konami revealed its FY 2015 financial results last night, posting a 0.3 percent net revenue increase on the previous year despite releasing fewer video game titles under its Digital Entertainment division. As a result, the Digital Entertainment business posted a net revenue of ¥96,975 million, marking a year-on-year decrease of 7.1 percent.

It has high hopes for this September's Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain, however, which it says "has garnered great response from home and abroad".

Response to DiRT Rally has been 'amazing', says Codemasters

dirt rally announce 05 -

DiRT Rally's chief game designer Paul Coleman has said that he is "delighted" with the response the game has received so far, despite the uncertainty involved in releasing the title in Early Access.

"This last week has been incredibly exciting," Coleman said in a post on the game's website. "The positive response DiRT Rally has received has been amazing and we are delighted that you have appreciated the direction we have taken.

"For many of us in the studio this is the first time we have put a game out in Early Access so getting your feedback together and working out how to act on it has been our key priority. We are still taking stock of the situation but it is already clear that there are some key areas of DiRT Rally that we'd like to improve based on your feedback. Some stuff is pretty easy to tweak but other areas are going to take a bit more work to ensure that we get them right for you."

One of the key areas Codemasters is focussing on next is improving DiRT Rally's wheel settings and force feedback, Coleman says.

"I'll be honest, while we had poured a lot of effort into our new physics engine we hadn’t gotten round to unravelling our wheel settings and FFB and many of you have quite rightly noticed that the settings the game have shipped with are more suited to a console racer than a PC Sim," he continued. "We want to get this right for you but to do it right we need to get under the hood and change the way that we do things. We've been reading your feedback, speaking the fans directly (big thanks to Betta Lines for his time) and we have a decent handle on how to improve things.

"Our simulation team are now hard at work removing legacy stuff and adding in elements that you have been asking for. We hope to have more info on how this is progressing in the coming weeks but rest assured the early results are looking extremely positive. This isn’t all we are looking at though. There are plenty of refinements and updates that we are making based on stuff you have been calling out as well as working through any bugs that have crept into the game."

dirt rally announce 18 -

DiRT Rally launched on Steam Early Access last week, quickly becoming one of the top-selling games on the platform. A full launch is currently scheduled for later this year, although it's uncertain whether the game will also arrive on console.

Much of the game's praise has been aimed at its realistic approach to rally racing, with Codemasters' brand new simulation-based physics model powering the game's handling.

"It is so incredible to drive one of these cars down the stage and feel every corner and every single turn and know that you've nailed certain sections, or kick yourself when you make mistakes," Coleman told VideoGamer.com ahead of the game's launch. "It's that kind of sense of rallying that we've perhaps lost in some of our earlier products that I think we're starting to return to with this one."

Today's your last chance to download PT to your PS4

Silent Hills screenshot

If you've added PT to your PS4 download list but haven't yet downloaded it to your console, make sure to do it now: the game will no longer be available for download after today's PlayStation Store update.

Konami pulled the downloadable game from PSN last week but kept it available for download to those who had previously added it to their download list. After today, though, the files will be gone for good.

The game is already thought to have been removed in certain territories, and it isn't entirely clear how long European users have left to download it before the PS Store updates.

PT's removal follows confirmation from Konami last week that Silent Hills had officially been cancelled.
