Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker is available now in the UK

captain toad1 -

UPDATE: Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker is available to buy in the UK now, VideoGamer.com can confirm. We've just bought one from our local GAME for £34.99.

The game also appears to be in stock at Argos for collection today.

Nintendo has yet to formally confirm that Captain Toad's release date has been brought forward or respond to VideoGamer.com's request for comment.

captaintoadjpeg -

ORIGINAL STORY: Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker will be available in the UK before Christmas after all, according to a report on industry site MCV.

The site claims to have been told that the Wii U puzzler has been given a "new UK launch date of Monday, December 21" and that "all UK online retailers have now been given the nod to begin shipping Captain Toad as they see fit".

Monday is actually December 22, but regardless MCV's report suggests that Captain Toad may be available nationwide next week.

Officially the game is still due to launch on January 2, 2015. Nintendo has yet to formally confirm that the release date has been brought forward.

MCV's update follows a day of confusion over Captain Toad's UK release date. Earlier today it was rumoured that the game would be soft-launching at GAME next week after online pre-order customers claimed to have received dispatch notices from the retailer.

The rumours suggested that the game would be shipping online today and would be available to purchase in-store from Monday.

GAME's mobile app also states that Captain Toad will release tomorrow, December 19.

A GAME representative told VideoGamer.com earlier today that the retailer would not be able to offer comment on the rumours. Nintendo has yet to respond to VideoGamer.com's request for comment.

Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker went on sale in North America earlier this month and had initially been due to release in Europe this side of Christmas before being delayed to 2015.

But if it does roll out on Monday, should you ask Santa to leave it under the tree? Head through to our review to find out what we thought of it.

Halo 3: ODST remaster to be free as compensation for Halo: Master Chief Collection launch problems

halo 3 odst -
halo 3 odst -

A remastered version of Halo 3: ODST's campaign is to be offered for free to owners of Halo: The Master Chief Collection as compensation for the game's troubled launch.

Coming to Xbox One in spring 2015, the upgraded campaign will run at 1080p/60fps and be free to anyone who has played Halo: The Master Chief Collection while connected to Xbox Live between the game's launch and December 19.

Eligible players will also receive an additional month of Xbox Live Gold, a re-imagined version of Halo 2's Relic multiplayer map, and an exclusive in-game nameplate and avatar for free as compensation for the ongoing trouble.

"Last month, I promised the Halo and Xbox community that addressing the matchmaking issues and other bugs impacting players’ experience with Halo: The Master Chief Collection was our #1 priority," said 343 Industries studio head Bonnie Ross. "We’ve been working around the clock deploying weekly content updates and numerous server-side adjustments that have shown good results and we’re encouraged by the feedback we’re hearing from you."

She continued: "This has been a humbling experience and highlighted how we as a studio can – and need – to do better for Xbox fans around the world. We are so grateful to our fans who have stood by our side and we appreciate all of your patience as we worked through these issues. As a token of our appreciation and to thank fans for the continued support and understanding, we will be offering the following items, for free, to anyone who has played Halo: The Master Chief Collection online since launch (11.11.14) through today (12.19.14)."

343 says that neither the remastered version of the Halo 3: ODST campaign or Halo 2: Anniversary version of Relic were "part of our original development plans, but as a result of community feedback, and to do something special for our fans, both are now in development".

The developer has yet to confirm whether ODST will be available to download separately as DLC, but says that it "may share more details in the future regarding the potential availability of the campaign for “Halo 3: ODST” within “Halo: The Master Chief Collection” other than as part of this offer."

It currently has no plans to include ODST's popular wave-based mode Firefight.

"The satisfaction and joy of our fans is absolutely critical to everyone at 343 Industries and we regret the issues and the frustration you have endured," added Ross. "We are truly sorry and thank you for your continued patience and support of the Halo franchise."

'Twas the Friday before Christmas when Miyamoto teased a new Nintendo console

wii11 -

Nintendo has groups of people "working on ideas" for a new hardware system to replace the Wii U, Shigeru Miyamoto has teased.

miyamoto wii u -

Discussing the unannounced hardware with ABC, Miyamoto explained that Nintendo is still "focused on providing a robust line-up of Wii U software for next year," adding that "for the time being, our focus is on the Wii U hardware, but Nintendo as a whole has groups working on ideas for new hardware systems.

"While we're busy working on software for the Wii U, we have production lines that are working on ideas for what the next system might be."

Wii U launched in November 2012 but has struggled to achieve the same level of success as its predecessor. Figures released in October put Wii U sales at 7.29m units worldwide.

Miyamoto also dropped hints that fans may have to wait until the next hardware generation to see a new Mario game.

"Since we first created Mario, people have compared him to Mickey Mouse," he said. "I've always said Mickey Mouse evolved with each evolution in animation. You saw Mickey Mouse each step of the way. From early on, I wanted Mario to be that character in the digital world, so that with each digital evolution, he was there to usher in the next era.

"I think that maybe when we release the next hardware system, you can look forward to seeing Mario take on a new role or in a new game."

Nintendo has yet to announce its next-gen plans but has previously said that it is working on technology to make it easier to port software across both handheld and home console systems.

GTA 5's Online Heists are launching in early 2015

Grand Theft Auto Online screenshot
Grand Theft Auto Online screenshot

Grand Theft Auto 5's Online Heists will launch in early 2015, Rockstar Games has announced.

The four-player co-op mode for GTA Online allows players to plan, prepare and execute multi-tiered Heists across Los Santos and Blaine County.

The long-awaited feature was expected a lot sooner, but GTA Online producer Imran Sarwar has told IGN "they just turned out to be a lot more difficult than we originally thought".

So what will players be getting access too early next year?

"Each heist requires 4 players all at rank 12 or above, with one player as the designated heist leader," explains Sarwar. "Leading a heist requires owning a high-end apartment so that you have a room available to set up the planning board. From there you'll be able to launch missions as the leader, starting with the prep work and building up to the score itself."

The new gameplay is split into "five unique strands involving over 20 total missions, which will add up to around 20 hours of gameplay," says Sarwar. "We hope players will then replay them multiple times to take on the other roles and to try different ways of tackling the missions.

"We've tried to add a lot of variety and there's a mixture of open-ended gameplay, big set-pieces and a few surprises too."

Complete all five heists in order with the same set of players and you'll be rewarded, as will players who complete the content in first-person mode. You'll also be able to take part in Elite Bonus Challenges which promise big cash rewards if you complete each part of a heist while meeting certain criteria.

As for that early 2015 release, Sarwar says: "We never want to have to move a date but if something is delayed, it's because it's not at the level we expect of ourselves. And while we're not there yet, we're getting close and Heists will be ready early in 2015."

Assassin's Creed Unity Patch 4 put 'on hold'

assassins creed unity1111111 -
assassins creed unity1111111 -

Ubisoft has temporarily put Assassin's Creed Unity's next patch "on hold" to give the development team more time to deliver on its promise of "major performance improvements".

"Rigorous quality control is of paramount importance to us, and your feedback over these past weeks has indicated that it is important to you as well," Ubisoft wrote in a new update on the Assassin's Creed blog. "As stated last week, we’d expected to release the patch today (and we know that many are anticipating its release), but we are choosing to hold off until we can give you the improvements we’ve promised.

"We are committed to delivering major performance improvements, which requires that we refurbish the Paris map and that will take a few more days to hit the high level of quality our players deserve."

Patch 4 had been due to roll out on PS4, Xbox One and PC today, and was set to address issues with stability and performance.

Ubisoft initially promised that the patch would "rectify most of the remaining issues our players have been reporting", including issues with the game's framerate.

"Thank you very much for your understanding and continued patience," the publisher added.

#IDARB is February's Xbox One Games with Gold

Xbox Live Gold members will be able to download 8-player 'platform esport' #IDARB free of charge when it launches on Xbox One in February 2015, Other Ocean Interactive has announced.

A select group of fans will also be able to download the game two months ahead of time by grabbing a download code from the official IDARB Twitter account, on IDARB.com or through official live streams.

"#IDARB's development team is more than just us in the studio - it's the thousands of fans that made character sprites on IDARB.com, gave us feedback at shows, and contributed just about every game design decision in the game by tweeting their ideas at us," said Mike Mika, Head of Development for Other Ocean. "It might sound kind of strange to give the game away for free two months before it officially comes out, but that’s in line with how #IDARB was built from day one."

#IDARB is described as an 8-player competitive game "that combines classic 2D platformer mechanics with hockey and basketball rules". Players are able to create their own 8-bit character and compose their own fight songs before heading online to compete against others.

"We're big fans of #IDARB and we’re stoked Other Ocean is previewing the game early for fans," said ID@Xbox director Chris Charla. "We're excited to bring it to Xbox One free to everyone with Xbox Live Gold in February."

Correction: This story previously stated that #IDARB would be exclusive to Xbox Live Gold members for two months starting from February. This information was incorrect. Instead, Other Ocean Interactive will be distributing free download codes to fans via its Twitter account, on IDARB.com and through live streams in the run up to its February launch. The game will be available to all Xbox One users in February and will be free to Xbox Live Gold subscribers.

Sony: 'The best is yet to come on PS4'

ps4 11 -
ps4 11 -

PlayStation 4 has already gotten off to "a brilliant start with mega-franchises" like FIFA, Call of Duty and Assassin's Creed, but "the best is yet to come", according to PlayStation UK boss Fergal Gara.

"I really believe it's year two when you tend to see those titles come through that start to define the whole generation," Gara said looking back on the console's first year with IGN. "The best is yet to come on PS4. We've seen a brilliant start with the mega-franchises, like the FIFAs, Call of Duties and the Assassin’s Creeds, but we've also seen some strong new IPs launch – the likes of Destiny and Watch Dogs.

"But I think that the ones that are truly to define the generation are probably still to come, to be honest."

Gara believes that this has been typical of PlayStation's history, recalling the timeline of the original PlayStation.

"I mean you look back and there wasn't really a truly memorable title on PlayStation until '96, so a good year after the European launch and getting on for two years after the Japanese launch," he continued. "It shows that it does take some time for a platform to mature and for developers to make the best of it. In fact, you look at PS3, two of the highest-rated games of the entire cycle came in the last year with The Last of Us and GTA 5. So it’s a great sign of how things can progress over several years."

There are plenty of big hitters already announced for release on PS4 next year, of course, including Uncharted 4: A Thief's End, Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain, The Witcher 3 and more.

Sony's next major PS4 exclusive, The Order: 1886, goes on sale in February – but will it be one of the console's defining moments...?

DriveClub's troubled launch 'embarrassed' Sony & Evolution

DriveClub screenshot
DriveClub screenshot

DriveClub's troubled launch "embarrassed" both Sony and developer Evolution Studios, PlayStation UK boss Fergal Gara has admitted while pledging that the firm is "doing [its] damnedest to make things right".

"It's a disappointment," he said, speaking to IGN about the game's launch troubles. "When you lay your soul out as being '4ThePlayers', then what you certainly don't want is games that are not fully ready. It certainly wasn't any ill-intention on behalf of the team. It's ambitious as a game; they're as embarrassed as we are and all you can do in those situations is say sorry.

"We apologise to any players affected and are doing our damnedest to make things right. So that's what we've been doing and the game is pretty near-complete now. We don't want to introduce the PS Plus Edition until we’re confident the servers can take the load.”

Gara says that Sony wants to be confident that the game's netcode will handle the "millions of PS Plus users" before releasing the PS Plus Edition, which had been due to launch alongside the full game in early October.

"Unleashing it on the millions of PS Plus users is the next step, but we want confidence in the capacity and concurrency figures," he continued. "I'll say again: we apologise and are trying to sort it, and we’ll hopefully learn from it so we see it less in future."

DriveClub's Challenge system was reactivated last Thursday, with the new dynamic weather options introduced earlier this week.

Take-Two criticises Australian retailers for pulling GTA 5

Grand Theft Auto 5 screenshot
Grand Theft Auto 5 screenshot

Take-Two has criticised Target and Kmart's decision to pull Grand Theft Auto 5 from sale in Australia, stating that the game's removal "flies in the face of everything that free society is based on".

The two retailers took the game off shelves last week following concerns over the game's content.

"It's one thing for someone to not want to buy a piece of content, which is completely understandable," president Karl Slatoff is reported to have said during a presentation at a BMO Capital Markets conference yesterday. "And that's really the solution. If you don't like it and it's offensive to you, then you don't buy it. But for a person or a group of people to try to make that decision for millions of people... We have 34 million people who bought Grand Theft Auto, and if these folks had their way, none of those people would be able to buy Grand Theft Auto.

"And that really just flies in the face of everything that free society is based on. It's the freedom of expression, and to try to squelch that is a dangerous and slippery slope to go down."

Slatoff claims that Take-Two's business will be "completely unaffected" by the game's removal from the two chains, reminding attendees that "there are other places for folks to buy Grand Theft Auto in Australia".

"It's really more disappointing for us in that regard than it is in the context of our business," he continued. "Our business is going to be completely unaffected by this; it doesn't make a difference to us. At the end of the day though, it's not something you want because it's a poor leadership decision."

More Battlefield 4 DLC is coming, DICE confirms

Battlefield 4 screenshot
Battlefield 4 screenshot

Battlefield 4: Final Stand won't be the last piece of DLC for the hit multiplayer shooter, DICE has confirmed.

"With Battlefield 4 Final Stand released, we hope and believe that you will enjoy it together with the rest of the game for a long time," said community manager Jonas Elfving. "However, there is one thing we want to assure you: there is more content coming for Battlefield 4."

Elfving adds: "We will share details on exactly what this new content will be, and when it will arrive, in the near future. We understand that this may lead to even more questions about our plans, but rest assured that we'll get back to you on the future of Battlefield 4 when the time is right."

It's not clear if this new content will be offered free to Premium members, but the blog post does close with a link to becoming a Premium member.

DICE is also polling fans for their opinion on which classic Battlefield maps they want to see recreated in Battlefield 4.

"More details on the road ahead for Battlefield 4 will be shared going forward. For now, we'd like to thank you for staying awesome, and for joining us for another year of Battlefield 4!" concludes Elfving.

You'll be able to transfer your Destiny progress over to Destiny 2

Destiny screenshot
Destiny screenshot

Progress made in Destiny and its upcoming expansion packs will be transferable to its upcoming sequel, Bungie has confirmed.

While the game has yet to be formally unveiled, the developer confirmed to IGN that players will be able to bring their Guardian on the next adventure, and that the studio is "always dreaming" about where to take the franchise next.

"It's been no secret that we have a ten-year plan for the expansion and evolution of this franchise, and it's something that we're always dreaming about," said community manager David Dague.

"I've seen new concept art, I've seen new exotic weapons up on people's screens...it's a lot of fun to walk around the studio, because there's always somebody thinking about the next place you'll go, the next enemy you'll fight, the next thing that you'll earn for doing those things."

Evolution has yet to publicly acknowledge that the Challenge system has gone live, but a brief test suggests that it is now working correctly.

We'll update our review once we've been able to test its performance more substantially.
