PS4 celebrates its first anniversary in Europe today, and it's been a pretty impressive year for Sony's console.

The PS4 has outsold its main rival, the Xbox One, establishing itself as the console of choice for gamers.

Sony Computer Entertainment Europe president and CEO Jim Ryan had a few words to say about the console's first month.

"How time flies. Just 12 short months ago today, PlayStation 4 arrived in stores across the SCEE region, ushering in an exciting new epoch in videogaming," he wrote. "The most powerful and socially connected gaming system ever built, PS4 has provided the perfect platform for developers to deliver extraordinary experiences, and its first year has hosted some truly memorable titles."

Ryan mentioned the likes of Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare, Destiny, Far Cry 4, inFAMOUS Second Son, Dragon Age Inquisition and The Last of Us Remastered.

"And the best bit? This is just the beginning," he continued. "The next 12 months will see the PS4's burgeoning game library continue to grow at pace, with blockbuster new titles from both our teams at Worldwide Studios, including Bloodborne, The Order 1886 and Uncharted 4: A Thief's End, and from our third party partners – look out for Batman Arkham Knight from Warner Bros., No Man's Sky from Hello Games and Evolve from 2K Games, to name but a few."

Ryan also promises new additions to the PS4's system functionality to ensure PS4 "remains the best place to play and offers you unrivalled value".

Look out for more celebrations next week when the PlayStation brand turns 20 on December 3.

"We are very excited to bring Adventure Game to Witcher and board game fans alike. We have worked with Ignacy Trzewiczek, Fantasy Flight and Can Explode for a long time to make this an ideal entry for board game beginners, as well as a fun experience for people who know this genre and universe by heart," said RafaƂ Jaki, The Witcher Adventure Game executive producer.

Assassin's Creed Unity screenshot
Assassin's Creed Unity screenshot

Assassin's Creed Unity's Dead Kings DLC will be offered to all players free of charge as compensation for the game's bug-riddled launch.

The DLC campaign is expected to roll out early next year and had previously been included as part of the game's £23.99 Season Pass.

Players who have already purchased the Season Pass will also have the option to pick up one additional game for free, from a list that includes new releases Far Cry 4 and The Crew.

The full list of games available to choose from includes:

  • The Crew
  • Far Cry 4
  • Watch Dogs
  • Assassin's Creed Black Flag
  • Rayman Legends
  • Just Dance 2015

The compensation will be available across Xbox One, PS4 and PC, although it doesn't appear as if those affected will have the option to claim a refund instead.

Season Pass owners will still receive side-scrolling spin-off Assassin's Creed Chronicles: China as soon as it's released as well, although the pass itself will no longer be available to purchase.

unity bug -

"The launch of Assassin's Creed Unity was a highly-anticipated moment for me and for our development teams around the world who dedicated a tremendous amount of energy, passion and skill to the game’s creation," said Ubisoft Montreal & Toronto CEO Yannis Mallat.

"For us, it was the culmination of years of work on new technologies, the development of multiple innovations -- including an all-new game engine -- and an evolution of the Assassin’s Creed franchise’s core pillars. More importantly, we know that it was a highly-anticipated moment for many of you as well, as you looked forward to taking part in the first truly next generation Assassin’s Creed game.

"Unfortunately, at launch, the overall quality of the game was diminished by bugs and unexpected technical issues. I want to sincerely apologize on behalf of Ubisoft and the entire Assassin's Creed team. These problems took away from your enjoyment of the game, and kept many of you from experiencing the game at its fullest potential."

Assassin's Creed Unity attracted widespread criticism from fans at launch for its multitude of bugs, including glitches that led to players getting stuck in pieces of the environment, falling through the floor and characters' faces disappearing entirely.

The latest patch, which is said to include over 300 fixes and make improvements to the game's frame rate, rolls out today and PS4 and later this week on Xbox One and PC.

"We will continue striving to make Assassin's Creed one of the most ambitious and innovative franchises on the market, and we thank you for your continued loyalty and support," Mallatt added.

Further information on how Season Pass owners can claim their free game will be revealed shortly.

343 promises to make things right for Halo: The Master Chief Collection players

Halo: The Master Chief Collection screenshot

343 Industries studio head Bonnie Ross has promised to not only fix the issues with Halo: The Master Chief Collection, but also make things right with fans.

"With the initial release of Halo: The Master Chief Collection, however, we have not delivered the experience you deserve," explained Ross in a blog. "I personally apologize for this on behalf of us all at 343 Industries. Our team is committed to working around the clock until these issues are resolved.

"While our team works on continual improvements and towards solutions, my commitment to you is that we will take care of all owners of Halo: The Master Chief Collection. Our primary and continued focus is first on fixing the issues at hand. Once we've done that, we will detail how we will make this right with our fans."

Ross continued, explaining what went wrong with the game's matchmaking system.

"On the matchmaking front, we have encountered unexpected issues that were not apparent in our internal test environment and that have resulted in a frustrating experience, including long matchmaking times and low session success rates," wrote Ross.

"Within 343 Industries and Xbox, I can assure you that resolving these issues is our #1 priority. We continue to partner with the Xbox platform team to analyze all data to make ongoing server-side adjustments to continually improve the matchmaking experience. We are also preparing additional content updates that will address existing campaign, UI, and other issues to improve the overall experience. With each update we will carefully analyze data to confirm that the improvements we're seeing internally are also happening with fans at home."

In addition, Ross says the team at 343 is "planning multiple server-side tweaks and game content updates over the coming weeks.

"Looking forward, I want to give you a high-level cadence of the latest updates we're currently working on.  Development and testing of our latest content update continues and we are on track for release later this week. We will update you on the status and patch notes of the content update once we have a better understanding of our release window. Only through making changes on both the "server side" (matchmaking and other server rulesets) and, via content updates (to the game itself), can we make the significant progress we're working towards. And in the interest of expediency, we're attacking the problem from both sides, non-stop.

Ross concluded: "Please accept my heartfelt apologies for the delay and for the negative aspects of your experience to date. We're doing everything in our power to resolve it as quickly as possible."

We assume that by making things right with the fans, 343 will be handing out some form of DLC free of charge.

Watch Dogs Wii U couldn't even outsell FIFA 13

Watch Dogs screenshot
Watch Dogs screenshot

Sonic Boom isn't this week's only Wii U bomber. The Wii U version of Watch Dogs has performed so badly in the UK that it failed to outsell launch title FIFA 13.

Watch Dogs limped in at No.14 in this week's single-format Wii U charts, one position behind EA Sports' two-year old FIFA 13.

The game finally launched on Wii U last Friday, six months after its debut on PS4, Xbox One, Xbox 360, PS3 and PC. Sales figures for the Wii U version have yet to be announced.

Expect Watch Dogs' sales to be the final nail in the coffin for Ubisoft's venture into adult titles on Wii U. Earlier in the year, Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot said that Watch Dogs would be the publisher's last M-rated title on the platform.

"It's very simple," he said. "What we see is that Nintendo customers don't buy Assassin's Creed. Last year, we sold in very small numbers... What we see is that they are very interested in Just Dance, very interested by other kinds of game. So what we are trying to do is to focus more on the types of games they are interested in."

With sales like this, who can blame them?

Why do you need Far Cry 4's Keys to Kyrat when you have PS4 Share Play? Sony explains...

Far Cry 4 screenshot
Far Cry 4 screenshot

Far Cry 4's Keys to Kyrat was billed as a major exclusive to PS4 and PS3 users, enabling owners of the game to provide up to 10 of their friends with a 2-hour trial of the game's online co-op without having to purchase the game themselves.

But now that PS4's Share Play feature has launched, how exactly does the Keys to Kyrat differ? Sony has attempted to make things clear in a new blog...

Keys to Kyrat
Each key allows one of your PSN friends to download Far Cry 4 and play a trial of online co-op without needing to purchase the game. They can play a free two-hour trial of online co-op in Far Cry 4.

Share Play
Stream a game to a friend’s PS4 so they can watch you play, take over your controller, or play as the second player in games that feature local multiplayer (Far Cry 4 doesn't support local multiplayer) even when they don't own a copy of it. Spectate or play most PS4 games for up to one hour at a time.

VideoGamer.com Analysis

For an accurate visual representation of Far Cry 4 you'll want to get hold of a set of Keys to Kyrat, but you will be limited to co-op. To try out the single-player and competitive multiplayer you'll need to connect to a Share Play session, but be aware than you'll be limited to visuals dependent on you and your host's internet connection, with a maximum output of 720p at 30 frames per second.

If you're on PS3, Keys to Kyrat is your only option.

Hyrule Warriors' second DLC, the Twilight Princess Pack, will launch for Wii U internationally on November 27, Zelda franchise director Eiji Aonuma has confirmed.

The highlight of the new DLC will be a playable Twili Midna character, who only appeared in this form at the end of Twilight Pricess. In the classic Zelda adventure Midna is cursed and cast out from the Twilight Realm.

"When I was developing Twilight Princess, I thought it was such a waste to let a beautiful princess like her only appear in the ending. Now Koei Tecmo Games has made my wish to see more of her come true," explained Aonuma.

Twili Midna can utilise the powerful Mirror of Twilight weapon that was destroyed in Twilight Princess.

The DLC pack also features two new costumes and an adventure map.

The Twilight Princess DLC Pack will be available individually priced £6.29, or as part of the DLC Season Pass for £13.49, which also includes access to three other DLCs.

Update 1.03 includes the "new content and geometry" found in The Dark Below that players will be able to access once they purchase the DLC on December 9, as well as a "new social feature that enables users to access a channel for Team Chat".

Other fixes to classes, weapons, activities, the HUD and more are also included in the update, along with rule changes to Iron Banner.

"This is the first in a series of updates that will deliver new content in the lead up to The Dark Below," said Bungie. "Update 1.0.3 provides new social features, revisions to activities, alterations to competitive spaces, adjustments to the player overall experience, as well as a sizable download of new content and geometry to support the first expansion of the world of Destiny. The Iron Banner special event is also being updated with new rules and features prior to its second run."

Advanced Warfare actually saw its second week sales drop a huge 77 per cent, but was still able to outsell the new-gen only Assassin's Creed.

Unity sold 52 per cent on PS4 with Xbox One taking 46 per cent, which is a smaller gap than you'd have imagined given the install base advantage the PS4 has in the UK. It looks like the Xbox-led marketing and Assassin's Creed Xbox One console bundle has done the trick for MS.

It's hard to compare Unity's sales with that of Black Flag given last year's game launched first on Xbox 360 and PS3. However, Chart-Track states that Unity has bettered the launch total of the last-gen Black Flag.

Assassin's Creed: Rogue debuts at No.6 on PS3 and Xbox 360. Combine the launch sales of both new Assassin's Creed titles and it would better that of Advanced Warfare this week.

Xbox One exclusive Halo: The Master Chief Collection is new at No.3, becoming the biggest launch for an MS published Xbox One title and the seventh biggest Xbox One launch from any publisher.

Other new entries this week include LEGO Batman 3 at No.5, PES 2015 at No.8 (FIFA 15 is still going strong at No.4 with sales up by two per cent), and WoW Warlords of Draenor in ninth spot.

Minecraft also launched on PS Vita and claims the biggest launch of the title on all PlayStation platforms. The block building sandbox is also the third biggest launch on PS Vita, only bettered by Uncharted: Golden Abyss and FIFA Football.

Elsewhere it's a bad week for SEGA with Football Manager 2015 falling from No.3 to No.14 and Alien: Isolation dropping from No.4 to No.15.

VideoGamer.com Analysis

The overwhelmingly negative player reaction to Assassin's Creed Unity will be of a major concern to Ubisoft, which will expect its latest open-world title to stick around in the chart for many weeks to come. Last year's AC Black Flag currently sits in 16th position and has spent 48 weeks on the chart. With a number of other big titles still to launch the pressure is on Ubisoft to fix the title before the wind is knocked out of its sales.

It's actually Ubisoft's own Far Cry 4 which could snatch sales away from Unity, but it too will suffer from launching alongside Rockstar's GTA 5 on PS4 and Xbox One. We expect GTA 5 to take the top spot from COD Advanced Warfare, but the race for second will be a battle between Far Cry 4 and Dragon Age: Inquisition.

Also new this week and hoping to make a splash inside the Top 10 are Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor (old-gen), Escape Dead Island, Sonic Boom, Watch Dogs Wii U and WWE 2K15 (new-gen).

Project Totem, the puzzle platformer from Max: Curse of the Brotherhood creator Press Play, has a new title and will launch for Xbox One on December 17 and PC in January.

Now titled 'Kalimba', the game sees players controlling animated totems on a quest to overthrow an evil shaman and reclaim the island of Kalimba for the Kalimbi people.

Kalimba features both single player and couch-based co-op, which creative director Asger Strandby says is "kind of a friendship tester – if you can play the game and high five more than you slap each other, you're probably ready to get married".

The game was born during the final development stages of Max: Curse of the Brotherhood by Asger Strandby and his brother Bo Strandby.
