Platinum’s Scalebound cancelled on Xbox One

Scalebound
Scalebound – no longer due out this year

One of Microsoft’s major exclusives for 2017 has been canned, in what will be a major blow for Bayonetta creators Platinum Games.

Microsoft has confirmed that it is no longer funding development of Xbox One exclusive Scalebound. Their only explanation for the move comes via this short statement:

‘After careful deliberation, Microsoft Studios has come to the decision to end production for Scalebound. We’re working hard to deliver an amazing line-up of games to our fans this year, including Halo Wars 2, Crackdown 3, State of Decay 2, Sea of Thieves and other great experiences.’

The news was leaked a few hours earlier by website Eurogamer, which claims that work on the game stopped at the end of last year.

Scalebound has been in development for four years and has suffered multiple delays in that time. It’s alleged that a number of senior staff had to take a month off in the autumn due to overwork, putting the project even further behind schedule.

The game was the biggest budget title Platinum had ever undertaken, and, as he explained to us last August, a pet project of Devil May Cry creator Hideki Kamiya.

Given the cost involved, and the close ties with Microsoft, it’s currently unclear whether the game could be continued with a different publisher.

Despite the critical acclaim for many of their games, mainstream success has always eluded Platinum and they’re now worrying short of announced projects.

NieR: Automata for Square Enix is their only scheduled game for this year, with role-playing title Granblue Fantasy Project Re:Link and smartphone app Lost Order planned for 2018.
