Yooka-Laylee reveals multiplayer modes in new trailer

The spiritual sequel to Banjo-Kazooie isn’t just a single-player game, as Playtonic reveal a suite of new couch co-op mini-games.

Back when Banjo-Kazooie was originally released in the late ‘90s the video games industry was a very different place. Online gaming was the preserve of PCs and 48K modems, and for console gamers multiplayer meant sitting round the same TV playing split-screen.

But rather than both kinds existing together in harmony, online has all but pushed local multiplayer into extinction. But not when it comes to Yooka-Laylee.

The trailer below showcases a number of four-player split-screen mini-games, of the sort that Rare often used to include in their games back in the day.

There are eight games in total, located in a purposefully dated looking arcade, including the pleasingly self-explanatory Kartos Karting, Blag the Flag, Jobstacle Course, and Hurdle Hijinx.

There’s also a shoot ‘em-up mini-game called Gun-let Run and what sounds like some kind of arena brawler called Glaciators.

The main story campaign also has a co-op mode, where a second player can control the Bee Team who are… a swarm of bees who can be used to collect objects and trigger traps for the primary player.

Yooka-Laylee is out on April 11 for Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC. There’s also a Switch version planned, but no release date for that yet.
