‘Dragon Quest Heroes II’: 5 Fast Facts You Need to Know

We were pretty shocked to find out that a mashup of Dragon Quest and the Musou genre could mesh so well.

2015’s Dragon Quest Heroes featured the whimsical creatures, catchy soundtrack and heroic personalities of the long-running RPG series. With all that came a combat system that delivered the non-stop action of the Warriors line of beat ’em up’s. Developer Omega Force have taken all the lessons they’ve learned from that debut to craft a much improved mega sequel. On April 25, Dragon Quest Heroes II will finally make its way over to American shores. A bevy of new heroes and monsters will make their presence felt alongside a ton of welcome features that this sequel truly deserves.

Dragon Quest Heroes II is massive. In order to make sure you don’t get lost in all its wonder and splendor, let’s break down its five most important mechanics.

1. Exploring Has Taken on More of a Feel Reminiscent of the Dragon Quest RPG’s

Dragon Quest Heroes mainly took place on a giant airship that allowed you to shop, swap out heroes and perform a bunch of other tasks. As for the sequel, you and your loyal party of world heroes can actually move around the world in a more traditional sense. Now you can travel around the in-game world to visit various towns on foot. The huge world map will throw you into special battle stages that are reminiscent of RPG dungeons.

You’ll also get caught up in random battle encounters while you’re out exploring, plus there’s treasure chests to discover and weather conditions to be aware of. For example, the rain has a negative effect on your traveling roster. This sequel may feature the same Musou gameplay from the last game, but its exploration mechanics harken back to Dragon Quest’s mainline entries.

2. This Time, There’s One of Two Main Protagonists to Choose From

Like the very 1st game, you’ll be introduced to two main protagonists. But this time, you’ll only have the option to select one of them and see the the entire story __play out from their perspective. The male hero’s default name is Razel, while the female hero (who happens to be Razel’s cousin) is named Teresia. Depending on the main character you choose, you’ll get the chance to change their default name. The hero you didn’t select will stick with their main name, though. Healix, the Jelly Slime who accompanied the 1st game’s heroes, returns to aid Razel and Teresia during their grand adventure.

Another big change coming to this sequel are character classes. This feature only applies to the main characters, by the way. Switching classes for either Razel or Teresia allows you to alter their gear types and abilities for use in battle. A few of the known character classes includes the Martial Artist, Mage, Monk, Thief and Warrior. When you run into any of the game’s weapons merchants, you’ll be provided with new abilities that depend on the proficiency of your character’s weapon type. So now your chosen warrior can take a more open-ended approach to their progress thanks to different classes and equipment.

3. Several Roster Members are Returning from the 1st Game Along With New Additions

Dragon Quest Heroes II won’t be bringing back the two main heroes from its predecessor. However, it will add a bunch of new sub-heroes and include several returning characters from the last game. Two of the game’s warriors are actually making their Dragon Quest franchise debut with this release, too. Refer to both lists below to see all the new and old faces featured in the game:
